I was driving down the freeway in Salt Lake City one afternoon in ‘95, when this Big Fat wide body car drove up along side me. I was looking so hard to find out what it was that I never caught sight of the IMPALA logo on the trunk. After spending days looking through dealerships in an effort to locate it, I finally found one sitting in a parking lot and fell in love! I ordered the car in DCM and was waiting for its arrival when I received a phone call from the dealer. They had a black one that came in and the person who ordered it didn’t want it anymore. I was shocked! Who would do that? With anticipation and excitement, I arrived at the dealership, took one look and knew it was mine
That happened in November of ‘95. From that point on, I was obsessed with the car. I couldn’t relax unless I could see it at all times. At restaurants, it had to be in my line of vision, or I would leave the table to go out and check on it every 15 minutes - just to make sure no one was messing with it! I am still this way - maybe even more so!
I started to change things on it right away. I dropped the car in ‘96 using the beltech springs and changing the wheels to weld racing wheels with 17x9.5 in the front and 17x11 in the rear. From ‘95 to 2004, it was a daily driver for me. In 2004, I decided to give it a new look beginning with the hood from Suncoast Creations. Once I installed the hood, I needed to get it into a paint shop, and I wanted the paint to be perfect. I spent a long time looking for the right place, the right painter. In talking to a close friend of mine, I was referred to David Jewkes. I was told he didn’t just take on any job. After introductions were made, David took a long, hard look at my car. Luckily, he loved the car as much as I did (almost!) and history was made. What I didn’t know at the time was that David was not just a painter - he also did body work.
We discussed in great lengths what we could do as far as the body and the paint. We started with the bumpers. I purchased them and dropped them off for Dave to work his magic. He put a lot of love and dedication into this job; countless hours making sure everything would fit right. After all the body work was done, it came down to the paint - the ultimate finishing touch. My contribution to this was what colors to use and that I wanted flames. How it was to be designed and laid out was up to him.
He met with Chris Peterson - artist/owner of Dollar Graphics to design the paint job. It took weeks for the final design and then many more hours on David’s part to turn the computer generated design into the living work of art it is today. It was the longest wait I’ve ever had to go through. I didn’t lay eyes on my car again until it was finally done. David had it parked in the driveway waiting for me to pick it up. The shining, perfect beauty of it literally took my breath away! It was unbelievable! Better than I had ever dreamed possible! I put a lot of trust into Dave’s expertise and talent - and it paid off. I believe that is why it was done so well.
The first place I took the car to was the ISSCA National Car Show in Vegas. After seeing it out there in the open with the beauty of the body and paint, I knew that I needed to change one more thing - the wheels. It was the last, finishing touch. After some searching, I contacted Lexani and asked them to remake the Roma II’s. It took a few tries to get the right set up for the hubs, but once we put the wheels on, we knew it was the right choice. The car was done.
