So it all started with these 3 little words: "Honey, we're pregnant!"
At the time, I was bouncing back and forth, in and out of cars, trying to decide what I liked, and I was then driving a lifted 4x4 regular cab Dodge V-10 truck, but looking to buy a LS1 F-body... Trucks werent for me. I thought I was set on a 00-02 WS6, but when my wife told me I would need room for a baby seat, I knew my my gear shifting, muscle car days were long gone.
So I'm out driving around looking for a car... something 4 door, but still manly. I knew I didnt want a Maxima, or Camry, but I couldnt afford what i really wanted... a AMG benz, or M series BMW sedan. When I left the Mercedes dealership, and turned to head home, I saw it... a dark cherry metallic Impala-ss. I said to myself "self.. there is a 4 door man's car, that you wouldnt be embarassed to drive, and can afford to maintain!" So I took it in the shorts trading in the truck, but got a great deal on the SS.
That was April of 2002, and I havent looked back since.
NOW.. as my wife will tell you, I am not one to keep any vehicle stock, and the SS would be no exception. The day after I drove it home, the windows were tinted 5%, the Remote start alarm was installed, my CD player, 2 amplifiers, new 6x9s, door speakers, and a single 10" subwoofer were all installed.
At first, I knew that I wanted 20" wheels... but unsure of the look I wanted, I did a couple of weeks of researching on the web. I found a wheel that I thought I liked a lot.. the KMC Venom. It was big, chrome, and mean looking. But it turns out, that It looks like total crap on the B-body because of the offset, and lack of a wider wheel than 8.5" (Sure wish there had been more 20" wheel info on the forums back then.. would have saved me a ton of money, lol) So I shortly there after, sold the KMC, and went on a quest to find a staggered wheel setup that would not only set me apart from the crowd, but also give me the look, and stance that I wanted. Little did I know, that quest would last me 9 months.
In comes the Axis Se7en Mod. I couldnt get Axis to build me a custom bolt pattern, custom offset 20" Se7en multipiece (they only offer them in 19") so I opted for the 20" single piece wheel in a 10" wide rear, and a 9" wide front. Not everyone likes my choice of wheel, its kind of a "love it, or hate it" style on the b-body, but one thing is for sure, no one can say "that wheel is played out" or "is that the same wheel that so-and-so has?" because they dont get played out with only one set on a b-body, and your brother's cousin doesnt have a set on his roadmaster.
From there, I picked up a Paxton SN2000 supercharger kit from (yes, another one of the "hotshots" on CuSStom.com) Dave "roktman" Breiner when he decided to upgrade to an ATI kit. After a few minor mods, and custom dyno tuning done personally by Ed Wright (fastchip) the Pimpala layed down 368RWHP, and 402ftlbs of torque. This was done on the 20" wheels, and on 89 octane gas.
After the car was moving faster, I decided to slow it back down by adding hundreds of pounds of audio/video gear, and sound deadning material. The system includes a Pioneer Premier DEHP940MP head unit, Zapco Competition series 6.5" components, sealed enclosures in the front doors, Memphis amplifiers, JL audio W7 subwoofers, and optima yellow top batteries. An escort remote mounted radar/laser detector/jammer was installed after finding out that my windshield mounted unit didnt work through the sungate windshield.
The interior is going through a black/grey two tone transformation, and now includes black carpet, floormats (with black embroidery) black dash, steering wheel ring, rear deck, door panels, and center console. New black/grey suede seats are in the works, as well as a suede headliner. Billet door handles are now installed, and some more choice billet goodies are being custom built for me as I type this. The ST springs dropped the car, and the Koni shocks keep the ride nice.
I wish i could stop right there, but a rear end collision changed the car forever. The trunk lid, rear quarter panels, taillights, and bumper were all smashed in pretty bad, and I was not sure if the insurance company was going to fix it, or total it out, and just cut me a check for the value of a stock Impala. Turns out, state farm was pretty good to me, and asked ME what I wanted. I told them I wanted my car fixed, and at LEAST as nice as it was before the accident, and they told the bodyshop to "do whatever he wants". So from there, smoothie bumpers, and the emblems, trunk, grill, and wheel well moldings were all shaved, and smoothed. The Trans-Am mirrors were fitted, and painted, the 91 taillights were smoothed out, and painted to match the car. MAJOR color sanding, buffing, waxing, and polishing resulted in a nearly flawless paint job, and a "best paint" trophy at Impalafest 2005 (less than 2 weeks after the car was finished).
While this car WAS my daily driver, up until the day of the accident (April 28th, 2005).. now I'm not "scared" to drive it, but it sees the road a lot less, and doesnt leave the garage in bad weather, especially rain. With the amount of time, money, blood and sweat I have invested in this car, not only is it not going to be sold, but its a part of our family. My 3 year old little girl came home from the hospital in it, she helps me work on it, and she tells everyone she knows, that "daddy has a impala ss". She can spot another B-body a mile down the road (even wagons) and gets upset when we have to get out of it after a weekend cruise.
I love my Impala SS, its my pride and joy, and while currently, it has over 115,000 miles, you wouldnt know by looking, or driving it. If you happen to see the so dubbed "PIMPALA" (immortally registered with the Oklahoma DMV) at a local carshow, stop by and say hi.. I'm actually a really nice guy, no matter what everyone tells you.
